Fatality Free Friday

Monroe helps to spread the road safety message in line with two major national campaigns

Monroe is proud to be involved in two major Australian road safety campaigns that are making impressive inroads towards decreasing the road toll.

The World's Largest Driving Lesson in April (April 28) and Fatality Free Friday on Friday May 28 are two linked national events designed to create major public awareness of the urgent need to reduce Australia's annual number of road fatalities and injuries.

The World's Largest Driving Lesson is a world first and a strong lead-in to the Fatality Free Friday national road safety campaign. This event is where learner drivers nationwide along with their instructors, take part in a simultaneous driving lesson across multiple venues on Wednesday April 28. This brilliant awareness strategy will include at least 250 drivers across 11 national venues to gain the world record.

Fatality Free Friday is a multi-award winning national road safety initiative sanctioned by the United Nations as an official Australian event of Global Road Safety Week. Since its inception in 2007, thousands of individuals, government bodies, community groups and leading automotive companies such as Monroe have recognised and supported this very important annual community event.

These national road safety awareness events, are joined by Driversafety.com.au to form a powerful triumvirate of road safety platforms in which the Monroe shock absorber brand is intrinsically involved.

By placing road safety at the front of Australian motorists and road users minds for one Friday each year, (May 28 this year), that day's road toll could be reduced to zero. This is the goal of the event, to have a day where there is not a single road death across Australia. To achieve this goal, Australian motorists and road users are urged to take the pledge of Fatality Free Friday, which is a promise to "drive safely".

In Australia, the average road toll is between 1500 to 1600 people per year. For every one fatality, approximately ten people are injured. These figures are shocking and should not be considered as inevitable - a reduction in these numbers is up to the knowledge, care and responsibility of each and every driver on our roads.

Fatality Free Friday aims to focus public attention on road safety and to encourage all road users to think and drive safely all of the time. This event represents a fresh approach in dealing with a very complex issue. It is a call to action that serves as a public platform for a targeted and on-going approach to road safety. Media, community and corporate involvement is essential to achieving the program's goal of reducing the road toll and to have at least one day where there are no fatalities on Australia's roads.
